Cuba
Welthungerhilfe finished its work in Cuba in mid-2018, having undertaken projects there for 24 years. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, which cut its close connection with Cuba, agriculture was in a sorry state. Especially in cities the food supply was unstable. After an emergency relief phase, Welthungerhilfe successfully focused on the sustainable improvement of food production and urban agriculture. The situation of the population has since improved: According to the Global Hunger Index, Cuba is no longer one of the countries with extremely alarming nutrition problems. Moreover, the framework conditions for aid organisations have changed.
