The Republic of Tajikistan in Central Asia borders Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, China and Afghanistan. Only 7% of Tajikistan’s surface area lies at an altitude of less than 1,000 metres, and 70% is covered by alpine mountains. Despite improvements over the past decades, Tajikistan has a high poverty rate. In 2022, more than 13% of the population lived below the national poverty line (World Bank). The majority of the population lives from agriculture, although less than one tenth of its surface is arable to any degree.
