In crisis-ridden Afghanistan, many families are struggling to make ends meet. Often, women in particular have no chance of earning their own income. In Herat province, a project offers women the opportunity to learn how to grow saffron. After all, saffron can be grown in one's own home garden, and that is important. Often, women are not allowed to leave their homes for traditional and cultural reasons. The women of the cooperative cultivate and market high-quality saffron and thus earn their own money.
In so-called Nutrition Smart Communities, people confront hunger on many levels. Women and children attend courses on healthy eating and hygiene at a nutrition seminar in Paroha in Rautahat district, Nepal. Community members are encouraged to stand up for their rights and become actively involved in community politics. This strengthens agriculture and other sectors for better nutrition.
In the Kenyan village of Subo, Mumina Mohamed has learned how to increase her yields of corn, mung and black-eyed peas using climate-friendly farming methods. As a result, she can provide her children with three meals a day and pay their school fees.
Madachir Kadir shows an onion from the vegetable garden in Tahoua, Niger. People's local environment – whether village, district or community – remains the most important level for food supply. Changes to food systems and food policy affect them directly here.
Welthungerhilfe In Brief
Welthungerhilfe turns 60 this year. It is one of the largest private aid organizations in Germany; politically independent and non-denominational. With courage and determination, it is striving for a world without hunger. Since it was founded on December 14, in 1962, 10,895 overseas projects in about 70 countries have been supported with 4.46 billion euros. Welthungerhilfe works on the principle of help for self-help: from fast disaster relief to reconstruction and long-term development cooperation projects with national and international partner organisations.
