FCDO: Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office
The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) is leading in the UK on efforts to fight extreme poverty globally, and is one of the most important donors for international development cooperation and humanitarian aid.
The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office supports economic and private sector development, health, education, good governance and conflict resolution. FCDO lays special emphasis on improving the situation of women and girls.
The department focusses on:
- Addressing the root causes of instability, insecurity and conflicts,
- Eradicating extreme poverty and increasing people's access to basic needs (food, water, education, health, housing),
- Strengthening people's and societies' resilience to crises,
- Developing the private sector in partner countries in order to increase prosperity and reduce poverty.
The office was founded in 1997 (as Department for International Development) and is mainly working in Africa, Asia and in the Middle East.
Besides projects carried out and funded by FCDO itself, the department supports and promotes partners' programmes, too. In cooperation with FCDO, Welthungerhilfe is primarily involved in African countries such as Sierra Leone and Burkina Faso. Visit website.
