Final Evaluation Report 2014: Malawi

This evaluation aims to assess the extent to which Welthungerhilfe's project "WASH Infrastructure Rehabilitation and Health & Hygiene Promotion in Primary Schools in Central Malawi" has succeeded.

Details

According to it's GDP Malawi is one of the poorest countries in the world, ranking 174 out of 187 states listed in the UNDP Human Development Report of 2014. Preventable waterborne diseases continue to be major causes of sickness and death among children in Malawi. The main causes of diarrhoea are the use of unsafe water, as well as unhygienic practices in food preparation and unsafe excreta disposal.

The Project WASH aims at contributing sanitation and hygiene facilities and behaviour change in health and hygiene practices.
Unexpected outcome in Central Malawi: A WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene)-Intervention in Primary schools has a positive impact on parent-children relationships. This and other findings are to be found in the evaluation.
