+++ The humanitarian situation in Syria remains catastrophic even after the transfer of power in December 2024. 9.1 million people are experiencing acute hunger. After 13 years of civil war, the economic situation is desolate and agricultural production is severely limited. Welthungerhilfe is expanding its project work in Syria to new regions in the provinces of Aleppo, Idlib and Damascus in order to help displaced families in the country to return and rebuild. +++ Syria's recent past is marked by oppression, violence and destruction. Since 1963, the country has been ruled autocratically. Demonstrations against the government in 2011 developed into a civil war, which over more than 13 years resulted in several hundred thousand deaths. About 3.9 million refugees are still abroad, most of them to neighboring countries. Another 6 million Syrians remain displaced in their own country. According to UN estimates, 14.6 million Syrians are no longer able to secure enough food for themselves, which is more than half of the country's population.
