+++ Current events: Monsoon floods claim lives +++ Over 1,000 people have died as a result of flooding in Pakistan since the end of June. The majority of deaths occurred in the particularly severely impacted region of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in the north of the country. A total of almost 7 million people have been affected by the floods. Welthungerhilfe and its partners are active in several affected areas. In order to provide rapid assistance, an initial €500,000 has been made available for this purpose. Our colleagues are focusing on providing local people with clean water, food, and temporary shelter. +++ Pakistan is one of the world's countries most affected by climate change. Extreme rainfall and earthquakes – the country is repeatedly hit by severe natural disasters. Especially the smallholders suffer from the regular earthquakes, flooding and landslides. Their houses are swept away by nature’s force, and fields and irrigation systems are destroyed. The crops in the fields are ruined, and fields cannot be prepared for planting. Welthungerhilfe is implementing both acute emergency aid and long-term development projects in Pakistan. Disaster preparedness measures also help people to be better equipped for future emergencies, such as heavy monsoon rains.
