On June 24, a series of powerful earthquakes struck northern Venezuela, causing widespread damage to homes and infrastructure. At least 5,208 people have been killed and more than 16,000 have been injured. According to authorities, approximately 30,000 people are still missing. Thousands have lost their homes, and many families continue to live in temporary shelters with limited access to clean water, sanitation, healthcare, and essential supplies. As emergency response efforts continue, humanitarian organizations are working to address urgent needs while supporting the transition to early recovery.

Coordinated humanitarian response
Welthungerhilfe (WHH) has allocated €200,000 in emergency assistance and is supporting the humanitarian response of long-standing Alliance2015 partner organizations, ACTED, Ayuda en Acción, and CESVI. Drawing on their combined expertise and presence in the region, the organizations have been able to launch emergency operations rapidly.
Current activities focus on providing emergency shelter materials, hygiene items, and food packages. Despite challenging conditions, the first relief supplies reached affected communities within days of the disaster, providing urgently needed support to people impacted by the earthquakes.
Katja Dombrowski, WHH’s Expert for Emergency Communication, is currently accompanying emergency relief teams to the hardest-hit areas along the Caribbean coast.
Entire streets have been reduced to rubble. The need is enormous, and thousands of families will still require assistance for months to come.

Humanitarian assistance is therefore essential not only to meet immediate needs but also to help communities begin recovering their livelihoods and strengthen their resilience to future crises.
Working with partners to support earthquake-affected communities
Our long-standing partner organizations ACTED, Ayuda en Acción, and CESVI began planning their response immediately after the earthquakes. They are coordinating closely and jointly organizing relief efforts.

CESVI is working on the ground in the affected areas, distributing essential relief supplies and food. The organization is also preparing psychological support for affected families. CESVI is well positioned to respond, as similar activities had already been underway before the earthquakes.

Ayuda en Acción has distributed drinking water, initial supplies of hot meals, and blankets to people affected by the disaster. The organization is also supporting CESVI’s food distribution efforts.

ACTED has started distributing food in the capital, Caracas. The organization also plans to provide longer-term support to affected people with food, water, hygiene products, and safe shelter to help them recover and regain stability.
WHH has provided €200,000 in emergency relief funding to support the activities.
