Schools as Customers of Local Farms
In this rural development project in northern Burundi, the connection between local agriculture and school meals has been highly developed. The schools, long supported by Welthungerhilfe, are becoming large-scale buyers of local produce. The farmers have organised themselves in cooperatives and are learning how to improve yields and quality, e.g. with better seed material and soil protection measures. Having the schools as customers motivates them. Hygiene education in the schools completes the programme as even the best diet is undermined by contracting diarrhoea.
