Seed System Diagnosis in the Central African Republic

The Central African Republic (CAR) has made remarkable progress in rebuilding its agricultural sector following more than a decade of political instability and armed conflict that severely disrupted agricultural research, seed production, extension services, and market systems between 2003 and 2014.

Details

Despite these challenges, important efforts have been undertaken in recent years to re-establish the foundations of a functional national seed system.

Between 2024 and 2026, Welthungerhilfe (WHH) conducted a comprehensive diagnosis of the seed system to evaluate its performance, identify existing constraints, and determine opportunities for sustainable development towards a productive, resilient and trusted seed system. The assessment was guided by Welthungerhilfe’s Seed System Framework and combined national and regional stakeholder workshops, field research in 38 villages across the country, a seed gap analysis, and the application of a modified version of the Seed System Assessment Tool (SeedSAT, AGRA and CESSA, 2026).
