Myanmar Rice Food System Analysis Update, Ayeyarwardy May 2026

The Ayeyarwady Delta rice system remains operational but under growing strain, with falling farmgate prices, high production costs, fuel shortages, post-harvest quality problems and salinity intrusion weakening farmer confidence and resilience.

Details

The January–March 2026 update examines how stresses identified in the December 2025 Myanmar Rice Food System Analysis evolved across the Ayeyarwady Delta. Farmgate prices fell sharply post-harvest while production costs remained high, eroding farmer margins. Fuel shortages disrupted harvesting and land preparation, poor drying conditions increased grain moisture problems, and salinity intrusion dampened confidence in summer cultivation. The rice system remains operational, but increasingly dependent on fragile adaptations and informal arrangements across the rural economy.
