COP29: Climate Finance in Focus
On the occasion of the 29th UN Climate Change Conference (COP29) in Baku, Welthungerhilfe (WHH) draws attention to the critical situation of development and climate financing worldwide against the backdrop of stagnating public finances. The countries negotiating at COP29 therefore have a duty to step up national climate action and increase their financial contributions to fighting poverty and hunger. In 2023, temperature records were broken worldwide, while storms, floods, droughts and heatwaves wreaked havoc.
WHH works in many of the countries most affected by climate change, where efforts to protect vulnerable populations are inadequate. Around 90% of the available climate funds go to mitigation measures, mainly in high-income countries, and only just under 10% to adaptation measures. Least developed countries (LDCs) have received less than 3% of climate funds in recent years.
