Capability Statement Opportunity Crops 2025
We mainstream the promotion of opportunity crops into our global portfolio. We focus on crops that grow under locally adapted soil and climatic conditions, that contribute to soil health (e.g., through nitrogen fixation or by nourishing other living organisms), and that are nutrient-dense (in protein and micronutrients); in other words, plants which hold great potential for fulfilling nutrient requirements and addressing the climate and soil degradation crisis.
We apply a market system development approach to promote opportunity crops at all levels: supporting seed system development and research, community empowerment, collaboration with farmers and technical institutions, and partnerships including universities and the private sector. We also work on building supply and demand for opportunity crops so that healthy food becomes affordable and accessible.
