Welthungerhilfe Provides €500,000 for Pakistan Flood Emergency Relief
Severe flooding in Pakistan is spreading, putting millions of people at risk. Welthungerhilfe (WHH) is providing €500,000 in emergency assistance
Bonn, 8 September 2025: The situation in Pakistan's flood-stricken areas is becoming increasingly threatening. The eastern province of Punjab is currently experiencing the worst flooding in its history. Following devastating floods affecting more than four million people and inundating over 1,400 villages, attention is now turning to the neighboring province of Sindh. There, over 1.6 million people are at risk of losing everything they own.
“These floods are threatening the lives of millions of people and destroying their livelihoods. Pakistan is already one of the countries most affected by climate change. Without international solidarity, the people cannot cope with this disaster”, says Isabel Bogorinsky, head of programs in WHH Pakistan.
In response to the imminent threat facing residents of Sindh province, WHH and its local partners are providing proactive assistance. Families at particular risk have been evacuated. Relief supplies, such as food parcels, hygiene items and materials for emergency shelters, have also been stockpiled as a precautionary measure.
The situation is being made worse by persistent rainfall in Pakistan and India, as well as the Indian dams remaining open. Even if people are evacuated in time, they still face losing their livelihoods: houses, livestock, seeds, tools and machinery cannot usually be taken with them. “I am a widow with four children. My eldest son has stayed in the village until now to look after our two animals, which are our only source of income. Now, everything there is underwater, and he is fleeing to join us in the emergency shelter. There is no food for the animals here either, and I don't know if we will ever be able to return to our village”, reports Zareena Mai from Muzzafargarh in the disaster area. Returning to the devastated provinces is uncertain — standing water and mud pose significant health risks.
WHH is working with local partner organizations to provide the affected population with assistance as quickly as possible. €500,000 has been made available for this purpose. Food rations and hygiene items are already being distributed. Additionally, seed packages are being prepared for the upcoming planting season, damaged latrines and irrigation channels are being repaired, and the drinking water supply is being restored.
WHH urgently requests donations under the keyword: Flood Pakistan.
