Bonn/Berlin, 13th May 2025. Welthungerhilfe appeals to the German government to support the immediate resumption of aid deliveries to the Gaza Strip. The new IPC hunger figures* are alarming and show a dramatic deterioration in the humanitarian situation. The entire population is living in acute food insecurity and around 500,000 people are at risk of famine. For more than two months, two million people have been cut off from all humanitarian aid and are struggling to survive on a daily basis.

“The blockade of survival aid in the Gaza Strip, now in its second month, violates international humanitarian law to its core. There is hardly any food, fuel or medical care left, and hunger is increasing every day - as the published figures show. At the end of April, our local partners were able to drive the last tankers of water to shelters for displaced people. Now there is no more fuel to keep this lifeline going. Pregnant women and small children can still be examined in the health centers, but there is a shortage of medicines to treat them. It is unbearable to see people on the brink of starvation while hundreds of lorries with urgently needed supplies are stuck at the borders,” says Mathias Mogge, Secretary General of Welthungerhilfe, describing the dramatic situation.

Welthungerhilfe is very concerned about the plans of the Israeli and American governments for the future distribution of aid in the Gaza Strip. “The principles of neutrality, humanity, impartiality and independence must also serve as the basis for the future supply of the civilian population - as regulated by international humanitarian law. In talks and visits to Israel, the German government should work to ensure that humanitarian aid reaches the people in the Gaza Strip immediately and directly, regardless of political circumstances,” Mogge stressed.

Welthungerhilfe strongly condemns the brutal Hamas attack on 7 October 2023 in the strongest possible terms and calls for the immediate release of all remaining hostages. At the same time, it demands a lasting ceasefire, the protection of the civilian population and humanitarian aid workers, as well as safe and unhindered access to the necessary aid by the fastest possible means. In their work, Welthungerhilfe and its partners strictly adhere to the humanitarian principles of neutrality, humanity, impartiality and independence.

*The newly released figures come from the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), an international method for assessing hunger crises that is carried out jointly by aid organizations, UN and government agencies. The IPC has become the global standard for assessing food insecurity: IPC-Report
