Bonn, 2 September 2025: Following the earthquake in eastern Afghanistan, the number of dead and injured continues to rise. So far, around 900 deaths and more than 3,000 injuries have been officially confirmed. Many villages in the mountainous and hard-to-reach provinces are still cut off from the outside world. Welthungerhilfe prepares for the distribution of winter-proof tents and other necessary relief supplies together with partner organizations. 100,000 euros from an emergency aid fund will be made available for this purpose.

“Families now need winter-proof tents because the destroyed houses cannot be rebuilt before the winter approaches. Roads and paths are destroyed in many places, so that only a small amount of building material can be transported. The earthquake is exacerbating the already difficult humanitarian situation in Afghanistan. The country has been suffering from recurring droughts for four years as a result of climate change. In addition, there are almost two million returnees who have been deported from neighboring Pakistan and Iran since the beginning of the year and are now mostly without shelter and livelihoods. At the same time, international support for Afghanistan is declining,” says Elke Gottschalk, the regional director responsible for the country, describing the difficult situation.

Welthungerhilfe is urgently appealing for donations for the victims of the earthquake under the keyword: Earthquake Afghanistan.

Elke Gottschalk, regional coordinator, is available for interviews.
