Fostering Africa's Agricultural Productivity through Fertilizer Value Chain Financing

Welthungerhilfe and the Africa Fertilizer Financing Mechanism (AFFM) join forces in Sierra Leone with the FOSTER project

The Africa Fertilizer Financing Mechanism’s (AFFM) Strategic Plan for 2022-2028 prioritizes initiatives to enhance access to suitable fertilizers through improved finance and technical assistance, aiming to foster agricultural productivity across Africa.

As part of the strategic objective, AFFM selected Welthungerhilfe (WHH) to implement the "Fostering Africa's Agricultural Productivity through Fertilizer Value Chain Financing" (FOSTER) project in Sierra Leone.

This project seeks to address the underdevelopment of the fertilizer sector in Sierra Leone, where application rates are among the lowest in the world. WHH will promote the use of high-quality fertilizers that supply essential macro and micronutrients critical for crop growth, ensuring crops receive the nutrients necessary for optimal productivity.

The project will implement GAP and ISFM practices. In partnership with public, private and financial institutions, the project will enable access to fertilizers to more than 100,000 smallholder farmers in Bo, Kenema, Kailahun, and Pujehun districts, over the three-year period taking into consideration each farmer uses 25kg/ha of fertilizer every cropping season across, with an emphasis on inclusivity, particularly for women (40%) and youth (10%).

Distribution networks will be strengthened and expanded through the empowerment of Agrodealers and FBOs in the project area.
