On June 24, 2026, Welthungerhilfe and Terre des Hommes will jointly present "Kompass 2026 – On the Reality of German Development Policy and Humanitarian Assistance“. "Kompass" has been a leading voice in civil society’s critical examination of the German government’s actions in humanitarian assistance and development cooperation.
Global crises are intensifying, and political certainties are being shaken: development policy and humanitarian assistance are undergoing a phase of profound change. Ongoing conflicts - including those in Sudan and the Middle East - make it clear that values-driven international policy, grounded in human rights and humanitarian principles, has lost priority. At the same time, funding for humanitarian assistance and development cooperation is declining.
What does this mean for sustainable global development that is socially and human rights-based? The Kompass 2026 examines development policy challenges and opportunities: from youth-led protest movements in the Global South to the growing fragility of global food systems. The central question is whether the current reforms of German development policy and humanitarian assistance are up to the global challenges - or whether they are falling behind.
Join the discussion with us and key stakeholders from politics and government, as well as partners from the Global South:
- Forward-looking, crisis mode, or regression - where is German development policy and humanitarian assistance headed?
- Is the German government succeeding in meaningfully reconciling national interests with global responsibility for sustainable development?
- To what extent do the reforms in development policy and humanitarian assistance reflect the reality of global crises and needs?
