Seeding The Future Challenge Winners
Dynamic. Transformative. Impactful. These are a few words that describe project submissions for the Seeding The Future Global Food System Challenge – an initiative that seeks to inspire and support innovative, diverse and multidisciplinary teams to create solutions that will help to transform our food systems.
At the conclusion of the fourth year of the Challenge, more than $4 million in prizes and grants were awarded to winning teams whose innovations stood out among nearly 4000 applications that were submitted from startups, nonprofits, universities, research institutions, and multi-organization collaborations from more than 90 countries. The vast and varied interest demonstrates the significance and drive to create a more resilient and sustainable food system to feed the world's growing population.
On behalf of the Seeding The Future Foundation, a well-earned congratulation to all previous winners, and deep appreciation to all prior Challenge participants for their important work to address the critical issues facing food systems globally.
2024 Seeding The Future Grand Prize Winners
Awarded for innovations that are scalable, economically feasible, trusted, and compelling to consumers, and have demonstrated major impact potential to transform the food systems.
Oorja Development Solutions Limited
Awarded for its project “Scaling Climate-Smart Farming Solutions: Bundling Pay-Per-Use Irrigation with Sustainable Advisory Services for Smallholders.” Oorja provides a Pay-Per-Use farm-based service package to smallholder farmer in India, including water pumps powered by decentralized solar energy. Oorja’s comprehensive package also includes soil testing, seed supply, on-site training in sustainable practices, and a mobile app.
Savory Institute
Awarded for its project “KENYA MARA Regenerating Traditional Foods, Lands & Livelihoods through Maasai Conservancies.” Savory Institute’s Kenya MARA program helps Maasai herders graze their livestock on nature conservancies, supporting land regeneration and their traditional animal-based diet.
2024 Growth Grant Winners
Awarded for demonstrating their innovation is doable and has projected both economic feasibility at scale and high impact potential to transform the food system.
Council of Scientific and Industrial Research Institute – Savanna Agricultural Research Institute (CSIR-SARI)
Awarded for its project “Developing an NIR Tool for Rapid Screening of Aflatoxin-Resistant Groundnuts to Combat Aflatoxin Contamination.” The Savanna Agricultural Research Institute’s goal is to use near-infrared technology (NIR) tool to identify aflatoxin contamination in peanuts and reduce it with two naturally occurring antifungal metabolites found in peanut seed coats. This two-pronged approach is a sustainable solution to farmers in Sub-Saharan Africa, especially northern Ghana.
Toothpick Company Limited
Awarded for its project “Breakthrough Bioherbicide Technology Improves Food and Economic Security for Small-scale Farmers.” Toothpick Project produces an innovative bioherbicide from fungus to protect crops in Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia and Ghana from Striga witchweed, a devastating pest for small-scale farmers. This safe and affordable herbicide is applied as a seed coating to restore crop yield.
Yayasan Kopernik
Awarded for its project “PANGAN Program: Revitalizing Indigenous Farming and Building a Sustainable Food System for a Climate-resistant Bioeconomy and Community.” The PANGAN Program addresses food insecurity in West Timor by revitalizing indigenous farming practices, including promoting diverse and nutritious local food. PANGAN’s next phase pilots Local Food Hub, a scalable model connecting farmers and micro-agribusiness produce to local markets, building community and improving access to nutritious food.

2023 Winners
Seeding The Future Grand Prize Winners
- The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI): Awarded on behalf of its HarvestPlus program for their development of nutrient-dense porridges for use in school feeding programs in Zambia. These porridges utilize biofortified traditional food crops such that are often farmed and produced by women as additional contributions to the household income. IFPRI and HarvestPlus aim to uplift and equip vulnerable youth to grow into healthy, productive adults.
- Naandi Foundation: Awarded for its implementation of ReGen, a synergistic regenerative agriculture model to support farmers transitioning away from conventional, chemical-based farming approaches in India. Prioritizing biodiversity over monocultures, regeneration over extraction, and biological agri-inputs over chemical, Naandi Foundation provides a variety of free materials and knowledge tools to help eliminate dependence on high-cost chemical fertilizers and pesticides and improve the health of soil ecosystems and the foods produced.
Growth Grant Winners
- Association 3535: Awarded for establishing four solar cooling hubs and offering cold storage as a service to smallholder farmers in Sub-Saharan Africa. By installing large, cold storage refrigerated containers and standalone cooling systems that are attachable to existing storehouses, Association 3535 – a 2021 Seed Grant winner – provides smallholder farmers and small-scale fishermen with the ability to keep produce fresh, reducing post-harvest losses and increasing food security and potential income.
- Kopernik: Awarded for its PANGAN Initiative, addressing food insecurity in West Timor, Indonesia. By adopting an innovative approach that prioritizes the return to and use of indigenous farming practices, food preservation technologies, and a circular economy utilizing black soldier flies to convert organic and food waste into animal feed and compost for farming, The PANGAN Initiative seeks to create a more climate-resilient and self-sustaining food system and community.
- Nurture Posterity International: Awarded for its development of NutriPosh, nutritious and affordable composite flours for use in school feeding programs in Uganda. In addition to providing enhanced nutrition through the inclusion of pumpkin seeds in a composite Maize flour, NutriPosh sources ingredients produced through regenerative agricultural practices, utilizes solar powered dehydration technologies in their flour production, and uses biodegradable packaging to ensure environmental sustainability at every point in the supply chain. Nurture Posterity International is a 2022 Seed Grant winner.

2022 Winners
Seeding The Future Grand Prize Winners
- Acceso: Awarded for its work to eliminate Aflatoxin from smallholder supply chains. Acceso is working to eradicate dangerous aflatoxins in smallholder supply chains, starting with peanuts in Haiti. This system utilizes an innovative combination of economic incentives, rigorous testing, and strategic logistics which prevents aflatoxin contamination at the farmer, buyer, and consumer levels.
- Food Systems for the Future Institute: Awarded for their work in commercializing black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) as chicken feed to enhance egg nutrition and lower the cost of eggs in Rwanda. FSF Institute is working with the Rwanda Ministry of Agriculture and technical partner Protix Ltd. to develop Africa's first fully automated black soldier fly larvae production facility. This innovative facility will sustainably and cost-effectively scale poultry production and make it easier and more affordable for consumers to access nutritious, protein-rich eggs. FSF Institute was awarded the Growth Grant in 2021.
Growth Grant Winners
- INMED Partnerships for Children: Awarded for its Aquaponics Social Enterprise program which accelerates the deployment of a simplified, adaptable form of aquaponics, combining soilless crop production and fish farming in a closed symbiotic system, to increase global food production in the face of climate change and transition historically marginalized populations from subsistence to sustainable livelihoods. INMED Partnerships for Children was awarded the Seed Grant in 2021.
- Smart Villages Resource Group: Awarded for their Smart Agri-Centres, a community-led solar powered cold storage program that uses energy as a catalyst for rural development. Smart Villages focuses on using energy to enable access to improved agricultural techniques and practices, which in turn can improve quality of life in multiple ways.
- World Wildlife Fund: Awarded for its Farmers Post Program, which leverages the US Postal Service (USPS) as a significant yet underutilized asset to help bring fresh produce from farms to front doors across the United States. Farmers Post has the potential to transform how we get food from farms to consumers, benefitting farmers, consumers, the environment, and the USPS. WWF’s Farmer’s Post project was awarded the Seed Grant in 2021.

Seeding The Future Grand Prize Winners
- International Rice Research Institute: Awarded for its arsenic safe rice project which will deploy newly developed arsenic-excluding rice varieties that are much safer for human consumption in target arsenic-polluted regions to create socioeconomic and human health benefits.
- Solar Freeze: Awarded for its project on portable, solar-powered cold storage units for rural smallholder farmers of perishable produce, reducing post-harvest food loss that currently accounts for over 45% of fresh produce waste among rural farmers in developing countries.
- WorldFish: Awarded for its homestead aquaculture project to bring sustainable, nutrient-rich small fish production to small scale actors for a healthy and affordable option for consumers especially those who need it most such as young children, and pregnant and lactating women.

- African Centre for Technology Studies: Awarded for its project which promotes access to solar drying technologies to smallholder farmers; thus, providing optimal dehydration of fresh produce.
- Food Systems for the Future Institute (FSF) and Afya Feed Ltd: Awarded for its use of black soldier fly larvae to overcome the poultry and aquaculture industry feed affordability challenge.
- iDE: Awarded for its community-managed vermicompost fertilizer enterprises that incorporate Trichoderma - speeding up the composting process.
