After the tsunami in December 2004, five German NGOs formed an alliance called the Bündnis Entwicklung Hilft (“Development Helps Alliance”), to meet urgent needs and achieve sustainable improvements in developing countries. In addition to Welthungerhilfe, the alliance now includes Brot für die Welt, Christoffel-Blindenmission, DAHW Deutsche Lepra- und Tuberkulosehilfe, Kindernothilfe, medico international, Misereor, Plan International, Terre des Hommes, German Doctors, and associated member Oxfam.

The alliance members cooperate with a network of local partners who are already on-site in case of a disaster. The projects of the alliance members are geared towards empowering people to help themselves. The alliance is mainly active in Africa, Asia and Latin America.
